Appendix A: Museum Accessibility Survey Invitation

Multimedia accessibility has become a thorny issue that few in the museum community have addressed in their online publications. Over the past decade, much attention has been focused on creating museum facilities and web sites that are welcoming to persons with physical and sensory disabilities. Yet, multimedia development efforts have largely escaped this scrutiny.

As a graduate student in the Harvard University Extension School’s Museum Studies program, I am conducting this survey to gauge the attitudes and practices of museum staff towards accessible online multimedia. Your response will be highly valuable to my thesis research, and all identities will be represented anonymously in the results. A summary of the results will be made available to all participants along with several case studies that will detail how specific museums are negotiating responsibility for accessibility with their development team.

A similar survey will be conducted amongst multimedia developers who specialize in museum media. Should you have any suggestions of developers to include in the survey, please provide their name and contact info in the survey. Your comments and feedback are also encouraged. If you are unable to answer the questions, please forward to this message to the appropriate person in your institution.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
